Visit Cape Town On Your Next Holiday

On your visit to Cape Town, there are a certain few things that are a must do. These include going up Table Mountain, going to Cape Point, travelling to Robben Island and dining at some of the best Cape Town restaurants. But there are a few hidden gems that not many tourists seem to discover. And one of these hidden gems is the West Coast National Park.

It is situated 120km north of Cape Town alongside the National Road 27 – the main entrance is also situated here.

It is one of the few national reserve at the coast of South Africa and was created in 1985 to preserve it and the animals that call it their home.

In the past, this was the home of native Africans called the San and the Khoikhoi. Vasco da Gama landed first landed here in 1497 and founded the city of St. Helena Bay. It is also here that humans found the oldest foot prints of homo sapiens. The original can be found in the national museum of Cape Town situated near Kloof Street (after your visit to the museum, you can relax at one of the Kloof Street Restaurants). There is however also a copy of these foot prints located at the national park.
The West Coast National Park covers the area between Yzerfontein and Langebaan. It is a paradise for every bird lover and bird expert. You will find around 256 different bird species here some of which are endangered. It is therefore one of South Africa’s most important reserves where these birds can be protected. It is also here that birds decide to mate and raise lay their eggs.

During the summer, around 60 000 birds call this their home. It is always amazing to hear them sing and even watch them stalk for pray or look for food. The best time to watch these birds is during the low tide.

It is also during the summer, that the National Park welcomes many birds that hide away from the harsh European winter. Flamingos and pelicans are just a few that come here to avoid the cold weather in Europe. Near the beach, you will also find penguins.

There are also small islands located near the ocean. You will have the opportunity to go there with one of the boats and are able to see even more of the bird life that the West Coast National Park has to offer. There are also many viewing towers available where you can observe the wild.

If you decide to go here, you will need a lot of time. Firstly, the National Park is quite a distance away from Cape Town.

Secondly, the entire West Cost National Park is approximately 40 km long. There is also no tarmac but only sand road. You will have to drive carefully.
