Boondock Saints

What are the Boondock Saints?

The Boondock Saints is a 1999 crime thriller film written and directed by Troy Duffy. The film stars Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus as Catholic Irish fraternal twins, Connor and Murphy MacManus, who become vigilantes after killing two members of the Russian Mafia in self-defense.

After experiencing an epiphany, the brothers and their friend David, set out to cleanse their home town of Boston, Massachusetts of crime and evil; all the while being pursued by an FBI Special Agent.

The film opens with Irish brothers Connor and Murphy MacManus attending Mass at a Catholic Church, where the priest mentions the fate of Kitty Genovese.

While celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with friends, the Saints get into a bar brawl with three Russian gangsters who want to close the pub they are celebrating in. The brothers try to reason with the mobsters, but they respond with violence.

The next morning, the bandaged bodies of two of the mobsters are found in an alley.

One of the more powerful scenes is when the Saints recite the family prayer. The family prayer, a prayer to illustrate an oath/oration to God, that they will do whatever they can to shepherd the weak past the evils brought forth by man and the dissatisfaction with those who would do harm to the innocent people, and giving thanks to God that they are able to do something about it. That the souls of the wicked shall be purified with blood, and returned to their maker. “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit”.

And shepherds shall we be, for Thee, my Lord. Power hath descended forth from Thine hand, that our feet may be swift to carry out Thine command. We shall flow a river to Thee and teeming with souls shall it ever be. In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti.”
